Adana Archaeology Museum

The Adana Archaeology Museum sits at the heart of the Adana Museum Complex, regarded as the largest museum campus in Turkey and the Middle East, occupying the restored, cathedral-scaled weaving halls of the 1906 National Textile (Simonoğlu) Factory in the Döşeme quarter of central Seyhan.

History

Rooted in the old Adana Museum founded in 1919, the collection was moved into this registered industrial-heritage building and reopened with a contemporary display concept on 18 May 2017, so that a century-old factory and the archaeological wealth of Cilicia are now experienced in a single visit.

Architecture

The tall, steel-trussed industrial spaces have been transformed into wide, bright and free-flowing galleries, where the texture of stone floors and brick walls lends a cinematic depth to the presentation of the artifacts.

Highlights

Among the highlights are a Hittite statue of a god riding a chariot, the Achilles sarcophagus from Tarsus depicting the Trojan wars in high relief, a Medusa sarcophagus from Augusta, and a life-sized bronze statue recovered from the ancient city of Magarsus near Karataş. The large Mosaic Exhibition Hall, opened in 2018, displays the 4th-century Noah's Ark mosaic and Roman floor mosaics relocated from the Misis (Mopsuestia) ancient city on the Ceyhan, now protected indoors from the weather; this hall is the museum's most photographed section.

Cultural Significance and Tourism Value

Culturally, the collection is the region's principal archaeological reference, letting visitors read Cilician history chronologically from Neolithic mounds through Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers. Agencies favour it because the climate-controlled interior is an ideal refuge from the summer heat, several museums share one roof, there is ample coach parking, and it is close to the city centre.

Visiting & Access

The average visit is 60-90 minutes for archaeology alone and 2-3 hours for the whole complex. In guided programmes it is usually the finale of the city-centre walk, after Sabancı Central Mosque, the Stone Bridge and the historic bazaar. Nearby are Merkez Park, the Seyhan riverside promenade and the historic railway station. The best photo spots are the factory facade, the long colonnaded corridor and the mosaic hall. Access is easy by taxi, bus or metro within minutes of the centre, and step-free access is provided by ramps and lifts. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, while the summer months and the Golden Boll Film Festival weeks are the peak; as Mondays may be closed, confirming hours before arriving is advised.
