Antakya Künefe & Cuisine (UNESCO City of Gastronomy)

Antakya künefe is the dessert that embodies the city's gastronomic identity: strands of tel kadayıf pastry layered around Hatay's distinctive unsalted fresh künefe cheese, pan-fried in butter on both sides until crisp and golden, then drenched in hot syrup and served warm with pistachios, walnuts and clotted cream. Its roots lie in the wider Middle Eastern tradition of cheese-based sweets, but Antakya turned that heritage into its own school of craftsmanship.

Geographical Indication and Recognition

Antakya Künefesi received geographical-indication status in Türkiye in 2008 (registration no. 101) and was registered by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in 2013; its designated production area covers all districts of Hatay, including Antakya, Samandağ, İskenderun, Kırıkhan, Payas and Dörtyol. Hatay was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017 and is known for more than 600 local dishes, of which künefe is the showcase. In the 2025 TasteAtlas ranking of the World's Best Desserts, Antakya künefe finished first with a score of 4.51.

Cultural Significance and Tradition

Its cultural weight is considerable: mastering tel kadayıf is a craft handed down through generations in the Uzun Çarşı, and künefe features in weddings, religious holidays and hospitality rituals. The tourist appeal is that künefe is an experience in itself; visitors watch it cooked over open flame in copper trays and photograph the stretching fresh cheese.

Visiting and Access

Agencies favour it as a short, season-independent, high-satisfaction stop suited to every budget and group size, and a natural break within the museum and old-town walk. Average visit time is 30-45 minutes. In guided programs it is usually placed as an afternoon break after the Hatay Archaeology Museum and Uzun Çarşı. Key nearby points are the Long Bazaar, Kurtuluş Avenue, Habib-i Neccar Mosque, the Necmi Asfuroğlu Museum and the Harbiye waterfalls, where famous künefe makers also operate. The best photo moments are the copper-tray cooking, the stretching cheese and the pistachio garnish. Access is easy: the künefe shops cluster within walking distance around the central Uzun Çarşı; buses use the Archaeology Museum and bazaar-area car parks and drop passengers at the bazaar entrance to continue on foot. Wheelchair access varies by venue; ground-floor street-level salons are suitable, while historic han interiors can be constrained.

Best Time to Visit and Route

The best season is spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November); peak season is summer and religious-holiday breaks. Recommended route: museum in the morning, an Uzun Çarşı walk, a hot künefe break in the afternoon, then tea gardens in Harbiye.

Post-Earthquake Revival

After the 2023 earthquake many künefe shops reopened and became a symbol of the city's tourism revival.
