Hasan Suzer Ethnography Museum

The Hasan Suzer Ethnography Museum occupies a classic Antep mansion on Hanifioğlu Street in the Bey quarter, the historic heart of Gaziantep, where narrow stone lanes wind between cut-stone houses with projecting bay windows.

History and Architecture

Built in the early 1900s, the three-storey building rises over a cellar carved directly into the bedrock and, with its stone courtyard (hayat) paved in a geometric pattern of light and dark stones, stands as one of the finest mature examples of southeastern Anatolian domestic architecture. Having changed hands over the decades and fallen into ruin, the house was purchased in 1985 by the businessman Hasan Süzer, meticulously restored, and donated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on the condition that it serve as an ethnography museum bearing his name; the ethnography department of the Gaziantep Museum was then relocated here to create a mansion-museum.

Inside the Museum: A Traditional Antep Household

The museum's greatest value lies in re-creating a traditional Antep household in which three generations once lived together, using original objects and lifelike mannequins. The ground floor holds service spaces such as the bath, the hearth room and the tandoor kitchen; the first floor contains the bride-viewing room, a work room and the selamlık where male guests were received; and the upper floor is arranged as the haremlik reserved for the women of the house. Regional costumes, copper kitchenware, weaving and handicrafts, wedding and betrothal customs and scenes of everyday life are staged so vividly that visitors feel the spirit of the period.

Visitor Information

Agencies favour this museum on their Gaziantep old-town circuits because it is a compact, easily read cultural stop within walking distance of the castle and the coppersmiths' bazaar, adding a tangible layer of social history to an otherwise gastronomy-driven Antep programme. The average visit lasts 45-60 minutes and it is usually slotted between the castle and the Zeugma route on guided tours. The strongest photo points are the stone courtyard, the bay-windowed facades and the mannequin room settings. Although private cars and tour coaches can reach nearby points, the narrow historic streets force buses to drop off and pick up on the wider surrounding avenues. Being a multi-storey historic building with stairs, its accessibility for visitors with disabilities is limited. The best time to visit is spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), while summer and religious-holiday periods form the peak season. Note: the museum may currently be closed for restoration work, so it is advisable to confirm its status before scheduling a visit.
