Çimağıl Cave

Çimağıl Cave is a spectacular karstic formation located in the Taşındibi locality of Aşağıçimağıl village within the central district of Bayburt, roughly 55 kilometres south-east of the city centre and at an altitude of 2,450-2,550 metres above sea level. Reached by turning off the Bayburt-Erzurum highway at its 20th kilometre toward the Maden and Masat Deresi area and then following a stabilised mountain track, the cave is a natural wonder hidden within the silence of a high mountain plateau.

Formation & Nature

Sculpted over millennia as groundwater dissolved the surrounding limestone, this chain of galleries stretches for about 1,100 metres, with ceiling heights reaching 30 metres in places. It enchants visitors with stalactites, stalagmites, formations that merge into columns, cave pearls, cave flowers, organ-pipe-patterned walls, elephant-ear draperies and travertine steps. The palette shifts from pale yellow to white and from deep yellow to brown, transforming the interior into a crystal palace under light. Named travertine features such as the Governor's Lodge (Vali Köşkü) and the Table of the Universe (Kainat Sofrası), alongside the Cream Room, the Ghosts' Room and the Blue Room with its small underground lake, rank among the cave's most striking stops.

Conservation & Tourism Value

Opened to tourism in 2007, the cave was designated in 2020 by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation as a "qualified natural conservation area / natural site" (BAY01), formally securing its scientific and touristic value. Agencies favour this cave in Bayburt eco-tourism programmes because it offers rare subterranean geological richness and photogenic scenes seldom matched in the region; not yet swept up by mass tourism, it grants visitors a pristine sense of discovery.

Visiting, Access & Tips

A tour inside averages 60-90 minutes and, in guided programmes, usually forms the nature leg of a full-day "nature and history" route combined with Bayburt Castle, the Dede Korkut Monument and the Aydıntepe Underground City. The best photo spots are the cave entrance, the Governor's Lodge travertines, the Table of the Universe and the lake reflections in the Blue Room.

Route & Best Time

Owing to the high elevation, the ideal visiting window runs from late spring to early autumn, especially June to September; in winter the access road can close with snow, making the approach difficult. The peak season is July-August. The recommended itinerary is to depart Bayburt centre in the morning, reach the cave before noon to explore its cool galleries, and return via the castle and museums. Academic studies emphasise that the cave and its surroundings have high eco-tourism potential, though visitor numbers remain low for lack of adequate promotion, making the area a privileged stop for travellers and boutique agencies seeking an authentic experience away from the crowds.
