Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum

The Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, in the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa at the heart of ancient Edessa (Urfa), is a contemporary museum that safeguards a mosaic collection unmatched anywhere in the world.

History

Its story begins in 2006, when construction of a planned theme park in the Haleplibahçe quarter unexpectedly uncovered a Late Roman villa complex with richly decorated floors. Rescue excavations carried out between 2006 and 2008 revealed pavements of astonishing refinement, laid with tesserae as small as four square millimetres cut from Karacadağ and Euphrates river pebbles. Rather than lift them, archaeologists chose to preserve the mosaics in situ and raised a protective structure over them, opening the museum together with the vast neighbouring Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum on 24 May 2015.

Architecture

Architecturally the building is a feat in its own right: covering roughly 6,000 square metres with an 82-metre diameter, it is cited as one of Turkey's largest column-free spans, its unsupported roof letting visitors read the floors as a single uninterrupted panorama.

Collection and Highlights

The cultural importance of the collection is exceptional. Its masterpiece is the "Hunting Amazons" mosaic, the only known panel in the world to show four different mythological Amazon warrior queens together in one hunting scene; dated to the fifth or sixth century AD, it is joined by the Achilles mosaic, which narrates the hero's entire life within a single composition, the Ktisis mosaic depicting a pearl-crowned goddess symbolising the city's foundation, and further panels of lions, tigers and a figure leading a zebra.

Tourism Value and Visiting

Its tourist value is high because it visualises the Roman-Byzantine layer that complements the Neolithic story of Göbekli Tepe and Karahantepe. Agencies include it almost as a rule, since it shares one complex with the Archaeology Museum (home to the Urfa Man statue and Taş Tepeler finds), the two visited back to back on foot to build a powerful, single-stop narrative of history. Average visit time is 45 to 60 minutes; combined with the Archaeology Museum the complex takes about two to two and a half hours. Guided tours usually place it in the first morning, before the city heat builds, before moving on to the Balıklıgöl axis. Nearby lie Balıklıgöl, the Halil-ür Rahman and Rızvaniye mosques, Şanlıurfa Castle and the City Museum.

Visiting & Access

The best photography points are the upper walkway above the Amazon panel and the wide-angle view of the columnless ceiling (shooting without flash is advised). Access is easy: close to the city centre and reachable by taxi, municipal bus and tour coach, the complex has its own car park and a coach drop-off and pick-up area. Ramps and level flooring make disabled access largely comfortable. The best seasons are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October); peak season falls on the spring religious holidays, the summer school break and weekends. Recommended route: the Archaeology Museum in the morning, then the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, then the Balıklıgöl and Dergah axis toward midday.
