NatureKarataş Beach is central Adana's nearest gateway to the sea, stretching along the Mediterranean shore between the Seyhan and Ceyhan rivers roughly 47 kilometres south of the city.
Geography and History
The district is fringed by fine-grained sands that run uninterrupted for tens of kilometres to its east and west, giving it one of the broadest beach frontages in Turkey and making it the traditional summer escape where the people of Adana cool off from the inland heat. The plain behind the shore is part of the Çukurova delta, built up over millennia from alluvium carried down by the Ceyhan; this geological past created the ring of lagoons and wetlands that surround the area today. Karataş's history reaches much deeper: immediately to the west lay the ancient port city of Magarsus (Hellenistic Antioch on the Pyramus), where Alexander the Great is recorded to have sacrificed at the temple of Athena Magarsia in 333 BCE before the Battle of Issus, so the coast carries a strong archaeological layer alongside its seaside appeal.
Nature and Tourism Potential
Its tourist value rests on two axes: the classic sea-sand-sun trio with fresh-fish restaurants around the fishing harbour, and the nature-tourism potential of the neighbouring Akyatan, Ağyatan and Tuzla lagoons. The Akyatan shore is one of the Mediterranean's most important nesting grounds for green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerheads (Caretta caretta), which draws eco-minded tours and birdwatchers.
Visiting and Access
Agencies favour Karataş because it lets them add one light, nature-and-sea themed day to an otherwise culture-heavy Adana itinerary (Sabancı Mosque, Taşköprü, Misis, Anavarza); the beach-lagoon-turtle narrative works especially well for families and school groups. Average time on the beach is 1.5-2 hours for a photo-and-fish stop, or half a day as a proper beach outing; combined with a lagoon tour it fills a full day. In guided programmes it usually anchors the southern coastal line (Karataş-Akyatan-Yumurtalık) as its first stop. The strongest photo points are the historic Karataş lighthouse, the fishing harbour, the sands at sunset, and the flamingo flocks at Akyatan.
The best season runs from late spring to early autumn (May-October); July and August are busiest with domestic holidaymakers, while the turtle-nesting season of June-September places night-time beach use under conservation rules.

Visit & Logistics- Getting thereAbout 47 km / 45-60 minutes south of central Adana via the D-400 connection and the Karataş road. Regular minibus/bus services run from the Adana bus terminal to the district. A private car or tour vehicle is the most practical option.

- Coach accessTour buses reach the seafront boulevard and the fishing harbour area easily; there are convenient spots for drop-off, pick-up and short stops along the wide beachfront. Ground conditions on the inner roads to the lagoon (Akyatan) are limited for large vehicles.
- AccessibilityThe seafront boulevard and the area around the fishing harbour are largely level and suitable for wheelchair use; however, access to the beach itself is limited as it is a ramp-free sand surface. Accessible infrastructure is limited in the lagoon and natural areas.
