Kozluk Waterfall (Ayngebire Waterfall)

Kozluk Waterfall, near Tosunpinar village in the Kozluk district north of Batman and known locally as Ayngebire Waterfall, is one of Southeastern Anatolia's most unspoiled natural attractions.

Geography and Nature

Fed by snowmelt and mountain springs descending from the 2,821-metre Mereto Mountain, the stream runs through the Ayngebire Canyon before plunging roughly 40 metres over the rock face. Often called Batman's 'hidden paradise', the setting combines untouched vegetation, centuries-old plane trees and historic water mills strung along the gorge. Because so many seasonal cascades appear across its uplands, Kozluk is nicknamed the 'city of waterfalls', and Ayngebire is the grandest of them.

Historical and Cultural Context

The site's cultural texture comes from the old water mills lining the canyon and the ancient plane trees shading the trail; these mills are living witnesses to the district's traditional grain-milling heritage. Kozluk itself carries a deep settlement history, with Hezo (Kozluk) Castle, the Neolithic Hallan Cemi mound and its surviving stone-house architecture, and the waterfall reads as the natural counterpart to that heritage. The district governorate has folded the area into the 'Kozluk Sehr-i Zor Nature, Culture and Tourism Festival', adding a walking path and landscaping to open it to tourism.

The Visitor Experience

For visitors, Ayngebire draws people in all four seasons and functions as an open-air studio for photographers, hikers and even wedding shoots. Agencies add it to GAP and Southeastern nature tours precisely because it offers a wild, uncrowded, photogenic alternative to classic stops like Hasankeyf and the Malabadi Bridge. A visit begins at the Ayngebire recreation area with its car park and picnic layout; a pleasant two-kilometre walk along the stream leads to the falls. Average visit time, including the round-trip walk and a rest, is two to three hours.

Access and Recommended Route

Access is via the Batman-Siirt highway, about an hour's drive from central Batman to Kozluk, then along the signposted Tosunpinar village road to the recreation area. Cars reach the car park and picnic ground easily, but tour coaches are usually left at the entrance because of the narrow village road; the canyon trail to the falls is not wheelchair-accessible, though the picnic area itself is level and easy. The best time is spring (April-June), when snowmelt makes the flow strongest, and cool autumn; peak periods are spring weekends. Recommended route: Batman Museum → Malabadi Bridge → Kozluk centre → Ayngebire Waterfall hike, returning via the Gomeyan highland.
