Paşaoğlu Mansion Ethnography Museum

The Paşaoğlu Mansion Ethnography Museum stands in the Selimiye quarter of Ordu's Altınordu district, along the road climbing toward Boztepe, and ranks among Turkey's most graceful examples of nineteenth-century civil architecture. The mansion was built in 1896 by Hüseyin Efendi of the Georgian-rooted Katamidze (Paşaoğlu) family, who had migrated from Batum to Ordu during the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War.

Architecture & Interior

Its stones were quarried in the neighbouring town of Ünye, while the timber and tilework were imported from Romania, and master craftsmen brought from Istanbul carried out the fine construction. The three-storey building, set within its own yard, displays the grandeur of its age through half-columns with bases and capitals at the corners, eaved windows carried on consoles with floral motifs, and dressed-stone jambs. On the upper floor, the wooden ceiling of the broad sofa hall is adorned with oil paintings, with lozenge-shaped floral motifs at the centre and landscape scenes within the corner medallions.

History & Museum

In 1982 the mansion was expropriated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; after a careful restoration begun in 1983 it opened on 18 November 1987 under its present name. The ground floor houses administrative offices, the first floor is arranged as the ethnographic section displaying weapons, jewellery and men's and women's costumes, while the upper floor recreates nineteenth-century domestic life in Ordu with mannequins arranged across the sofa, the grandmother's room, the everyday room, the guest room, the bedroom and the wardrobe niche. The house also carries a moving human story: during the hardships of 1915 the family secretly sheltered around forty women and children for two and a half years in the sealed kitchen and pantry rooms.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Because of the narrow lane, tour coaches drop groups at nearby stops along the Boztepe road or the coast, from where a short walk reaches the mansion. As a multi-storey historic building with staircases, wheelchair access is limited on the upper floors.
