Sera Lake

Sera Lake lies just 10 to 12 kilometres from central Trabzon, tucked among forested slopes within the Yıldızlı (formerly Sera) neighbourhood of Akçaabat district. Its most remarkable feature is that its birth was witnessed by living people: on the morning of 21 February 1950, after prolonged and heavy rainfall, a colossal mass of earth and rock estimated at around 15 million cubic metres broke away from the slopes of the Derecik Valley and dammed the course of the Sera Stream. Water backed up behind the natural barrier and, in only eighteen days, filled the valley to form the lake we see today.

Formation & Natural Features

Because villagers literally watched a lake come into existence, Sera is one of Turkey's youngest and best-documented landslide-dammed lakes. The freshwater body is roughly 1,200 metres long, between 150 and 250 metres wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 20 metres; it holds carp, barbel and freshwater crayfish that later multiplied. Its surroundings were declared a third-degree natural site in 2005 and a Nature Park in 2010, protecting the basin and turning it into an organised recreation area. Its cultural and touristic value comes from offering an unbroken expanse of green forest and still water so close to the city.

Visiting & Tour Programmes

The main reason agencies favour Sera Lake is accessibility: unlike distant, tiring stops such as Sümela, Uzungöl or the high pastures, the lake sits right beside the centre, so it can be slotted into a programme as a spread breakfast, a kuymak break or a short nature walk without inflating transfer times. Average visit duration runs from one to two hours, enough to stroll the wooden bridges and lakeside paths, take a rowboat or pedalo out onto the water, and relax at the cafés and restaurants over meatballs, fish and tea from a samovar. On guided tours the lake is usually positioned at the start or end of the day, as a gentle opening or closing stop along the airport-hotel-city axis. Important nearby points include Akçaabat Ortamahalle, the Boztepe viewing terrace, the Atatürk Pavilion and the Hagia Sophia Mosque. The best photograph is taken in the early morning from the eastern shore, when the forest's reflection on the water is at its stillest.

Access, Parking & Facilities

Getting there is easy: a short turn off the coastal road by private car, or municipal buses 203C, 208B, 209A and 209D from the centre. Inside the park there is ample parking with room for tour coaches to enter and manoeuvre, along with fountains, a prayer room, toilets and a children's playground; the surfaced paths and wooden platforms are partly accessible to wheelchair users.

Best Time & Recommended Route

The best season runs from late spring to autumn, when the surrounding forest is lush from April through October. Peak season is the summer months and especially weekends; because the area is small and popular, arriving early is advised to avoid the crowds. The recommended itinerary places the lake as a half-day opener: central Trabzon, a breakfast break at Sera Lake, the Akçaabat seafront, then the Boztepe viewing terrace.
