Espiye Andoz Castle

Andoz Castle is a medieval defensive structure perched on a sharp rocky crag at the point where the Yağlıdere Stream reaches the Black Sea, within the boundaries of Sakarya (Andoz) village in the Espiye district of Giresun.

History & Architecture

Standing roughly 2 kilometres from Espiye town centre at an elevation of about 250 metres, the castle occupies a naturally fortified spur ringed on three sides by steep cliffs, embodying the shrewd defensive logic of its age. Its surviving fabric dates to the 13th-14th century, the era of the Empire of Trebizond under the Komnenos dynasty; the researcher Periklis Triantaphyllides recorded it as "Antonios Castle" and noted that it served as a watch-and-defence post against Turkish raids. The castle passed into Ottoman hands in 1461 with Mehmed the Conqueror's capture of Trebizond, and the tax register of 1515 records Espiye as a modest village with a handful of households clustered around the castle. Architecturally it was raised in rubble-stone masonry, its walls running east to west; the entrance is guarded by two semicircular bastions, while a well-preserved rectangular, barrel-vaulted chamber survives at the eastern end. Its small footprint suggests it functioned less as a garrison stronghold than as a lookout tower monitoring the coastal sea lane and the valley below, giving early warning of ships approaching along the Black Sea. The structure was placed under legal protection by the Trabzon Board for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Assets on 30 November 1990 and has since been restored for visitors.
