Tirebolu (St. Jean) Castle

Tirebolu Castle rises on a rocky peninsula that juts into the sea just north of the town centre, making it one of the most photogenic fortifications on the Eastern Black Sea coast.

History & Significance

Also known as Saint Jean (St. Jean) Castle, it takes its name from a Christian saint believed to be buried within its walls. Its earliest core is thought to date to the Hellenistic or Roman period; it was completely rebuilt during the Kingdom of Pontus, acquiring a medieval character, and reached roughly its present form in the 13th century during the late Byzantine era. The old name of Tirebolu, Tripolis, means 'three cities', a reference to the trio of castles built in the same century: St. Jean (the centre), Bedreme (Petroma) and Andoz (Saint Anthony). After 1204, under the Empire of Trebizond, Tirebolu became an important port city, and Genoese merchants played an active role in the region's trade.

Architecture

The castle sits on high rock, built of rubble stone with external buttresses supporting the walls; construction used basalt, pebbles rounded by the Harşit River, and cut limestone blocks. Access is from the south by a steep staircase built between 1896 and 1904, entering through a low arched gate. Inside are the ruins of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a small masjid, and Ottoman-era gravestones; an acetylene-gas lighthouse also once operated here, functioning by 1911.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Its touristic value comes largely from its setting: sea on three sides frames the castle against a blue canvas and offers superb light at sunset. Agencies favour this stop because it delivers high visual reward in a short time and slots neatly into the coastal route. The average visit lasts 30-45 minutes. On guided tours the castle is typically an intermediate stop along the Giresun-Trabzon coastal line, combined with a tea garden and the harbour. Nearby highlights include Bedreme Castle, Andoz Castle, the Espiye and Tirebolu harbours, the Harşit Valley, and roads climbing to the highland plateaus. The best photo spots are the narrow isthmus linking the peninsula, the top of the castle walls, and the shore band on the opposite bank. Access is easy: descend to the centre from the coastal highway; parking is handled in open areas around the town, and tour buses park near the harbour. Because of the steep staircase, wheelchair accessibility inside the castle is limited, though the view can be enjoyed from below.

Route & Best Time

The best time to visit is on clear days between May and October, with summer being the peak season. Recommended route: from Giresun centre travel west to east along the coast, taking in Espiye's Andoz Castle, then Tirebolu Castle with a tea break, and optionally rounding off the day at Bedreme Castle.
