Turnalık Plateau

Turnalık Plateau is an Eastern Black Sea highland in the Kabadüz district of Ordu, lying roughly 48 kilometres from the city centre at an elevation of about 1,500 metres. Positioned directly on the Ordu-Kabadüz-Çambaşı road, at the threshold of the route that climbs to the celebrated Çambaşı Plateau, it forms a natural link in the region's ring of highland pastures.

History & Culture

Like all Black Sea yaylas, its history is rooted in a centuries-old transhumance tradition: village families drive their herds up to the cool pastures each summer, lodge in timber and stone hamlets (obas), and keep dairy and livestock at settlements such as Öküzcüler. This pastoral culture endures today, giving visitors a chance to taste local butter, cheese and honey. Its cultural significance lies in keeping this traditional highland way of life and yayla-festival culture alive.

Nature & Scenery

In terms of natural features, the plateau consists of broad alpine meadows ringed by dark green spruce forest; it is known for its clear springs, cool summer air and, above all, the sea-of-clouds (cloud inversion) views that fill the valleys in the early morning. In winter, the snow-blanketed hamlets and forest turn the landscape into a postcard scene. Its tourism value comes from being accessible in both summer and winter, offering ideal routes for trekking and nature walks, and presenting photographers with unique scenes.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Agencies rarely program Turnalık as a standalone destination; instead they treat it as an extension of, and a stopover on, Çambaşı-focused highland tours, an arrangement that makes it easy to add a rich nature pause to a day trip. Average visit duration is one to two hours, enough for a photo stop, a short walk and some local produce tasting. On guided itineraries Turnalık typically features as a panoramic halt before the ascent to Çambaşı or on the way back down. Nearby points of interest include Çambaşı Plateau and the Çambaşı Ski Centre, the town of Kabadüz, Argın Waterfall and Karagöl. The most striking photo spots are the ridgelines where the sea of clouds appears, the forest clearings and the timber houses around the hamlets. Access is by asphalt road from Ordu centre via Kabadüz; while not motorway-standard, the road is largely paved. Rather than formal car parks, the plateau and hamlets use natural, levelled open areas. Because the final stretch can be narrow and winding, midibuses or minibuses are recommended over large tour coaches. Disabled access is limited by the natural terrain and gradient and is not wheelchair-suitable, though vehicles can reach the panoramic points.

Route & Best Time

The best time to visit is the highland season from June to September, with early mornings ideal for the sea of clouds; for snow scenery, January-February is preferred. Peak season is summer. Recommended route: Ordu centre → Kabadüz → panoramic stop at Turnalık Plateau → Çambaşı Plateau and Ski Centre → local produce shopping in Kabadüz on the return.
